The Big C….you know, Coconut!
By Emmie Steig
We have been coached that saturated fats are a “nono” but this is not the case for coconut oil. A spoonful of coconut oil a day keeps everything away, maybe even cancer!
Coconut oil consists of medium length fatty acids called Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). Because of this property it is metabolized differently, more quickly. Studies show that because of the MCTs in coconut oil, the nutrients are able to travel straight into the bloodstream without having to go through the lymphatic system (Brogaard). This is similar to the way glucose is processed.
Now you need to know:
1. Glucose feeds cancer cells
2. Fats, like coconut oil, are made into ketone bodies
When you process fats they are turned into these ketone bodies, which actually create a “hostile environment” for cancer cells (Brogaard). Cancer cells are not able to use ketone bodies as a source of energy; again they need glucose (sugar from any source). With a ketogenic diet, which is a diet that consists mostly of fats, there is less access to glucose. With a ketogenic diet rich in coconut oil, the coconut oil is quickly introduced to cancer cells but the cells won’t be able to use it.
Basically coconut oil is a quick boost of energy for your body and is a death wish for cancer cells!
Note: When using coconut oil make sure it is Virgin Coconut Oil rather than refined coconut oil, there are many more benefits because of its “higher antioxidant activity” as said in Marina’s article Coconut Oil: Emerging Functional Food Oil.
